When to Order Your Wedding Dress: A Simple Timeline

Ask ten brides when they ordered their wedding dress and you will hear ten different answers. Traditional bridal salons often quote six to nine months for a gown to arrive, and that wait can make planning feel stressful. Here is a simple, honest timeline. It covers how early to start, when to order, and why you still want breathing room even when your gown ships quickly.

First, how long a Perla Novia gown takes

Every Perla Novia gown is made to order and delivered within 7 to 10 business days, with complimentary shipping anywhere in the US. That is much faster than the traditional bridal timeline, but delivery is only one part of the process. Most gowns still need alterations, and good seamstresses book up quickly in peak wedding season. That is why we still recommend ordering early.

9 to 12 months before: dream and define

  • Save inspiration and notice which shapes you keep coming back to.
  • Learn the silhouettes. Our guide, Which Wedding Dress Silhouette Is Right for You?, explains A-line, mermaid, ball gown, column and boho.
  • Set a budget for the full bridal look: gown, alterations (often $150 to $500 or more, depending on the work), veil, shoes, undergarments and accessories.
  • Confirm your venue and season, because they shape fabric and sleeve choices.

6 to 9 months before: choose and order your gown

This is the sweet spot for ordering. You have time to change your mind, re-order a different size if needed, and book a seamstress without pressure.

  • Narrow your favorites to two or three. Try the Try It On button on each gown page to see the dress on your own photo.
  • Take careful measurements at the bust, waist, hips and hollow-to-hem, and compare them with the size guide.
  • Order your gown. Ours arrive in 7 to 10 business days.
  • When it arrives, try it on right away with the shoes you plan to wear, and check fit, length and comfort.

Browse by shape: A-Line, Mermaid, Ball Gown, Column and Boho.

4 to 6 months before: book your seamstress

  • Research local bridal seamstresses and read reviews. Ask about their schedule during your wedding month.
  • Book your fittings now. Most brides need two or three.
  • Bring your gown to a first consultation so they can plan the hem, bustle and any fit adjustments.

3 to 4 months before: first fitting

  • Wear your actual wedding shoes and undergarments to every fitting. Even a small change in heel height alters the hem.
  • Decide on a bustle style for the reception if your gown has a train.
  • Ask about small custom touches, such as adding straps, sleeves or a belt.

2 months before: accessories and the full look

  • Choose your veil length to complement your train and neckline.
  • Finalize your shoes, jewelry, hair pieces and a light wrap for cooler evenings.
  • Schedule your hair and makeup trial and bring a photo of your gown.

2 to 4 weeks before: final fitting

  • Do a last fitting in everything you will wear on the day.
  • Practice walking, sitting and dancing, and learn how to bustle the train (teach your maid of honor too).
  • Pick up the gown and store it hanging, in a breathable garment bag, away from sunlight.

The week of your wedding

  • Have the gown steamed, either by your seamstress or with a handheld steamer on low heat.
  • Pack a small emergency kit with safety pins, fashion tape, a stain pen and a sewing kit.
  • Breathe. Your dress is ready, and so are you.

Short on time? Here is the fast track

Planning a wedding in under three months, a courthouse ceremony or an elopement? Because our gowns arrive in 7 to 10 business days, you still have options. Order as soon as you can, book a seamstress the same week, and choose silhouettes that need fewer alterations. Column, boho and A-line gowns with a simple hem are usually the quickest to tailor.

A note on our made-to-order policy

Because every gown is made to order, all sales are final. That is one more reason to measure carefully and give yourself time. Please read our Shipping and Returns page and Terms before ordering. If you are unsure about sizing, our Bridal Concierge chat or info@perlanovia.com can help before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too early to order a year ahead? Not at all. Ordering early lets you try your gown at leisure, change your mind and book the best seamstress. Just store it carefully, hanging and away from sunlight.

What if my measurements change before the wedding? That is very common. Choose the size that fits your largest measurement today. A seamstress can take a gown in far more easily than let it out.

Do I need alterations if the size fits? Almost always for the hem, because your shoes decide the length, and for a bustle if the gown has a train. Plan on at least one fitting.
